Teeth Extractions in Longview, Washington

At Lower Columbia Oral Health, it is our goal to preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible. This is why we always encourage our patients to maintain proper at-home dental hygiene and to come to our Longview office every six months for regular checkups. However, to preserve your overall oral health, it may be necessary to perform teeth extractions. Our team performs teeth extractions and wisdom teeth extractions to help our patients find relief.

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are a number of causes for tooth extraction, including:

  • Injury: A sharp blow to the mouth, an accident or an injury may cause the tooth to become severely fractured or loose.
  • Tooth decay: Some teeth are difficult to clean even with regular brushing and flossing because they may be located at the back, or have deep crevices that cannot be reached by the bristles of your toothbrush. As a result, they become decayed. If not treated right away, they need to be pulled out.
  • Impacted teeth: If your impacted wisdom teeth interfere with neighboring teeth then they may need to be extracted as well.

When it is no longer possible to preserve your damaged teeth, we will perform an extraction.

What Can I Expect During a Tooth Extraction?

First, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. This will reduce your discomfort and make your procedure as pain-free as possible. If more than a single tooth needs to be pulled out or if the tooth is impacted, sedation may be necessary. We also provide sedation to patients who experience dental anxiety to help them relax during treatment. Be sure to ask about our sedation dentistry options, including laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

One of our dentists will perform the procedure. For an impacted tooth, the gum and bone tissue will need to be cut so that the tooth can be taken out using forceps, rocking it back and forth ever so gently until it loosens.

If the tooth is very difficult to pull out, then the dentist will cut it in pieces and remove each piece individually. Once the tooth has been removed, the extraction site needs to be closed. This may entail stitching (for surgical extractions) and then placing gauze over the site to stop the bleeding.

After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort when the anesthesia wears off. There might be some minor bleeding and swelling, as well but this is only temporary. Our dentist will provide you with post-operative instructions which must be followed to avoid complications.
