Sedation dentistry at Lower Columbia Oral Health allows patients to achieve their dental needs and goals in a safe and comfortable environment. Through our partnership with Peace Health, we are able to provide a full range of sedation services from oral sedation to general anesthesia. Sedation dentistry is appropriate for a variety of patients and is not limited to oral surgery procedures.
Many patients have a fear of dental work and so sedation dentistry may be used for simple procedures including fillings or even cleanings. At times our doctors will recommend some form of sedation for longer procedures or procedures that involve more extensive oral surgery including implants, grafting, or extractions. We welcome you to come into the office and discuss the different sedation options with our dentists. We have helped countless patients explore the possibilities that sedation dentistry provides and will help you tailor our services to your specific needs.
Below is a brief explanation of the different sedation services we provide. These services may be combined or adjusted as needed.
Laughing gas has been used successfully in dentistry for many years. Laughing gas is administered in-office via a nasal cannula and takes only minutes to achieve its effect. This form of sedation is generally good for patients who do not have an overwhelming fear of dentistry but would like something to “take the edge off.” One of the main advantages of laughing gas is that within minutes of discontinuation, you will be fully alert and able to continue with the rest of your day as normal.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication prior to your appointment. With this type of sedation, we are typically able to achieve a deeper level of sedation than with nitrous oxide alone. The effects of this form of sedation typically last hours after your appointment, therefore it is necessary to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
IV sedation typically gives us the greatest level of control over your sedation needs. With IV sedation we are able to titrate the amount of medication you receive based on your response and the length of your procedure. This form of sedation is best for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those patient undergoing more involved surgical procedures. IV sedation has been an excellent option for patients who require simple or complex dental procedures but have avoided the dentist for years due to dental anxiety. At times, IM (intramuscular) sedation may be substituted for IV sedation.
This form of sedation takes place in a hospital setting and is typically reserved for our patients with special needs or patients with complex medical histories.
